Cat Behaviors
It's a fact, that out of all the animals available to have as pets,
most people choose to have either a dog or a cat. They say you can
almost tell someone's personality by knowing what kind of pet they
own.
Dogs
and cats both can be great pets, but there are huge differences
in owning them.
One
major difference is that while you can usually tell what a dog is
thinking and why they are doing something, many cat behaviors tend
to make no sense. Though this can be confusing, especially to the
new cat owner, but this is one of the great things about owning
a cat.
They
can be quite mysterious. And trying to figure out why they are doing
what they are doing can be a lot of fun. The basic cat behaviors
are pretty predictable.
Kittens
are ogenerally full of energy and love to play. They like to crouch
and 'sneak around', which is really their method of learning to
hunt - even though they really have no need for this skill while
living in our modern world.
What looks like play is actually a life survival skill for them.
And it can be fun to watch when you bring your new pet home for
the first time.
Many
kittens also do something called ‘making biscuits’ which is something
they do when nursing. Some outgrow the urge and some do not. Our
fifteen year old Siamese still does this when he comes across something
soft.
Other
cat behaviors are a bit harder to read. Most kittens mellow out
as they outgrow kitten-hood, and spend most of their day sleeping
- at least that's the way it seems. However, there are times when
they will suddenly seem to revert back to being kittens, and will
race from room to room around the house doing what some call the
'night crazies'.
This
is when they suddenly attack and play with anything that catches
their eye. This could mean your shoes, the drapes, or even some
small piece of paper that has fallen to the floor. Some
scientists think this is due to the fact that cats are generally
awake at night, and get a burst of energy when the sun goes down
that they would need for hunting if in the wild.
Cats
learn some of their actions from the environment they are in, though
many behaviors are thought to come from instinct. I'm sure you have
heard that cats are also curious. And many cate, even while they
sleep, like to be someplace where they can see (or at least listen
to) what is going on around them. And
if they hear an intriguing noise - they will have to go and check
it out.
And
though most cat behaviors are interesing and fun, if your pet seems
to have picked up a potentially abnormal behavior that develops
out of nowhere, you may want to see if there is a medical reason
for the behavior. Sometimes, they do strange things to try to tell
us something is wrong.
